As soon as SEGA announced Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, the community response was something of sheer force. Sonic Riders was never quite enough, All-Stars Racing Transformed was racing with karts but not crazy fast enough (although I admittedly haven't gotten my hands on Team Sonic Racing), and people have been clamoring for a real return to very high speed and ridiculous arcade karting – CrossWorlds looks like that answer.

Racing across land, sea, and air, Sonic and SEGA are pulling out all the stops in their exciting latest racing title for PlayStation 4: with 23 characters to choose from, including eight new faces never before seen in a racing game of any sort; 24 perilous tracks, set throughout 15 vibrant areas; and up-to-four player split-screen action!

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Release Date

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds launched on September 25, 2025.

It is coming out for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S on the same day.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Characters

The roster is one of the best aspects of the game. At 23 playable characters, it’s the most in Sonic racing history.

Confirmed inclusions:

  • Sonic
  • Tails
  • Knuckles
  • Shadow
  • Jet the Hawk
  • Cream the Rabbit
  • Sage

Fans have been excited by the return of long-lost characters to racing games. As one fan worded it: “thx for bringing back Cream, she being the most forgotten character since racing trilogy, i'm gonna buy this game for Cream also Sage too.”

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Roster

Although SEGA has still yet to unveil the rest of the roster, leaks and speculation seem to hint towards a good mix of old school Sonic heroes, past rivals, friends from the Chaotix gang and fellow riders.

Fans have been keen to see more obscure additions from the Sonic world and nods towards the street racing-leaning Sonic Riders, The Secret Rings, and All-Stars Racing Transformed in the reveal trailer has sent communities ablaze.

Gameplay: Travel Rings and CrossWorlds

What you get with this setup is Travel Rings, which take racers that are midway through a course and warp them to fresh dimensions of CrossWorlds. In 15 different CrossWorlds, the entire atmosphere shifts: one moment you’re gliding over asphalt, the next you’re soaring through space or skidding across a lake of lava.

It’s this mechanic that adds an element of surprise and tactics and keeps every race feeling like a new experience.

Build Your Own Vehicle

  • 45 vehicles to choose from
  • 70 gadgets for upgrades
  • Fully customizable to match your racing style

With your choice of over 100 characters, including entry into Cartoon Network’s Hall of Game, all your friend or a computer opponent! Whether you are in the mood for a duel Ninja-style or a faceoff on the racetrack, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Let the games begin!

Items and Power-Ups

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds features 23 items — some classic ones are returning, and there are brand new ones too. The showstopper addition here is the Monster Truck, which turns your vehicle into a brutal behemoth that can drive right over your foes.

Game Modes

  • Grand Prix (classic circuit racing)
  • Race Park (new party mode for local fun)
  • World Match (online racing with up to 12 players)
  • Time Trials (for competitive speed run people.)
