Zhong Kui’s Folklore Lore
The demon queller is a divine being, Zhong Kui.
He later committed suicide for failing the imperial exam.
Later on in a dream, the emperor awarded him with the title of Demon Queller.
It is traditional to hang his picture in the belief it will scare away evil spirits.
And Zhong Kui is a guardian figure in Chinese history.
His myth is widely known in Chinese mythology.
I recall when I was young, we had Zhong Kui prints on the door.
Love how they are getting into even more deep Chinese folklore beyond just Wukong.
That’s a massive cultural beast for us.
They actually got his myth right!
Zhong Kui is typically depicted with a sword and fierce visage.
Amazing they picked that guy for the main character.
Kudos to Game Science for upholding this story.
This is so deeply connected with Chinese culture.”
He was always the ugly but virtuous one.
Funny how his suicide is just some more of his lore.
“He became everyone’s dad defender,” Armacost said.
And his legend lends itself beautifully to a game.
At last the world would know Zhong Kui’s name.
Zhong Kui was a story my grandmother would tell me.

The way the sword was hauled around by demons—shivers.

Conclusion
The overriding sentiment that comes through all of this, though, is how much love and faith the players already have for Game Science. People aren’t just excited about the graphics or gameplay — they’re engaging with the deeper folklore, exchanging memories from childhood and treating Zhong Kui as more than a figure in a game. That mixture — respectful of other cultures, emotionally evocative and simply exciting — makes this feel like so much more than just another release. And for us, it’s hard not to anticipate Black Myth: Zhong Kui with similar enthusiasm; this feels like the beginning of something really special, the type of game you know years from now will still be stuck in your head.
